Case Study: Stephanie’s Centretown Kitchen

How Stephanie’s Centretown Kitchen Became the Heart of Her Home – From Dark and Cramped to Bright and Functional

“David guided me through the process and helped me make design choices that fit my vision.”

When Stephanie and her West Highland Terrier, Poppy, moved into their Centretown townhouse condo in 2020, they loved the location but quickly realized the kitchen needed a major transformation. The layout was less than ideal, with a “one-way kitchen” that felt more like a walk-in closet.

“The kitchen was closed off by a wall, making it feel dark and cramped,” Stephanie said. “The wall also blocked natural light from the front window, leaving the hallway and kitchen in shadows.”

Finding the Right Partner for the Job

Stephanie understood the importance of finding the right contractor. After some frustrating consultations with other professionals, she chose David from Upland Builds on the recommendation of a friend.

“I wanted someone local and personal, not part of a big operation juggling dozens of clients,” Stephanie explained. “David was transparent about the process and flexible enough to let me take on parts of the project, like the painting.”

Collaborating on the Vision

Stephanie drew inspiration from neighbors with similar layouts and had a clear vision of what she wanted. “I wanted a bench under the half-bay window and an island where the wall used to be,” she said. “David was great at leaving me a usable kitchen during the renovations and collaborated with me on design ideas while I shopped for materials.”

One of the major upgrades was the flooring. The old, purple-hued square tiles were replaced with 6″x24″ porcelain tiles in a herringbone pattern, instantly brightening the space.

The centerpiece of the kitchen became a custom island, framed with IKEA cabinets and topped with a live-edge acacia wood tabletop. David also designed a unique decorative pattern for the end of the island that drew plenty of compliments.

“I had no idea how a kitchen island was built,” Stephanie admitted. “David guided me through the process and helped me make design choices that fit my vision.”

To complete the kitchen’s transformation, a stunning blue Mediterranean tile backsplash was added, sourced from Home Depot, bringing color and character to the space.
